seadetepõhised

Seadetepõhised (device-based) is a term used in Estonian technology discourse to describe approaches and architectures in which devices themselves form the primary unit of consideration. In seadetepõhised paradigms, software behavior, data processing, and interactions are largely driven by the capabilities and state of individual devices rather than by centralized services alone.

The concept is encountered in fields such as edge computing, Internet of Things, and embedded systems, where devices are heterogeneous, autonomous, and capable of local decision-making.

Key characteristics include local processing, modular software stacks, device discovery and interoperability standards, generic interfaces, security and privacy considerations, and update mechanisms that can be deployed without central coordination.

Applications include smart homes, industrial automation, mobile ecosystems, and distributed sensing networks, where components coordinate through device-to-device communication or edge gateways rather than through a single cloud-centric control plane.

Advantages include reduced latency, lower central bandwidth usage, greater resilience to connectivity loss, and improved privacy through local data handling. Challenges involve interoperability across vendors, security risks on resource-constrained devices, firmware updates, lifecycle management, and governance of data ownership and access.

Examples: a smart building where lighting, climate, and occupancy sensors operate with local AI and negotiate tasks directly between devices; or an agricultural sensor network where edge devices perform anomaly detection and only summarize results to central systems.
