satijnband

Satijnband, in Dutch often referred to as satin ribbon, is a narrow tape with a smooth, glossy surface produced by a satin weave. It is most commonly made from synthetic fibers such as polyester or nylon, but silk and cotton satijnband also exist. Polyester satin ribbons are the most widespread due to their affordability, durability and easy care, while silk ribbons offer a higher luster and a softer hand.

The defining feature of satijnband is its weave, which creates long floats on the surface and a bright, reflective finish. The front side is typically highly glossy, with a less shiny back side. Some variations are double-faced, designed for use where both sides will be visible. Ribbons can be unwired, or have edges finished to prevent fraying; many are heat-sealed or hemmed. Widths vary considerably, from a few millimeters up to several centimeters, with common consumer sizes ranging from about 3 mm to 25 mm.

Common applications include gift wrapping, decorative bows, clothing accents, hair accessories, wedding bouquets, crafts and home décor. Satijnband is available in a wide range of colors and finishes, including solid colors, metallics, and printed designs. When cared for, polyester satijnband is generally machine washable on a gentle cycle and can be ironed at low temperatures; silk variants require more delicate handling.

Historically, satin ribbons emerged from the broader satin textile family, with production expanding dramatically in the 19th and 20th centuries as synthetic fibers enabled cheap, wide availability. Today satijnband remains a staple in crafts, fashion, and event styling.
