Saarlojen are a breed of dog developed in the Netherlands. They are a cross between a German Shepherd and a Wolfdog. The breed was created by Dutch veterinarian Leendert Saarloos in the 1920s, with the goal of producing a dog that possessed the loyalty and trainability of the German Shepherd but also the independence and keen senses of a wolf.

The first successful crosses were produced in 1925, and the breed was officially recognized in the Netherlands in 1975. Saarlojen are known for their striking wolf-like appearance, with a lean build, erect ears, and often a dark coat. They are generally healthy dogs but can be prone to certain genetic conditions.

Temperamentally, Saarlojen are often described as reserved and independent. They can be loyal and devoted to their families but may be wary of strangers. Early socialization and consistent, gentle training are crucial for a well-adjusted Saarloos Wolfdog. They require significant exercise and mental stimulation due to their high energy levels and intelligence. Their predatory drive can also be strong, necessitating careful management around smaller animals. Saarlojen are not typically considered ideal pets for novice dog owners.
