Säätösolenoidi, known in English as a control solenoid or simply a solenoid valve, is an electromechanical device used to control the flow of liquids or gases. It functions by using an electric current to generate a magnetic field, which in turn moves a plunger or armature. This movement opens or closes a port, thereby regulating the flow of the fluid.

The core components of a säätösolenoid typically include a solenoid coil, a plunger, and a valve body with ports. When electricity is applied to the coil, it creates a magnetic field that pulls the plunger. If the valve is normally closed, this movement retracts the plunger, opening a pathway for the fluid. If the valve is normally open, the magnetic field pushes the plunger to close the port.

Säätösolenoidit are widely employed in various applications due to their simplicity, reliability, and speed of operation. They are commonly found in automatic washing machines to control water inflow, in irrigation systems for precise watering, in pneumatic and hydraulic systems for automation, and in automotive systems for fuel and exhaust control. Their ability to be rapidly switched on and off makes them ideal for automated processes where precise timing and control are crucial. The operation is typically binary, either fully open or fully closed, though some more complex designs allow for proportional control of flow.
