A rökgenerator is a device designed to produce visible smoke or aerosol for purposes such as visualizing airflow, creating stage effects, or simulating smoke conditions in safety training. In theatre, film and live events, they provide a controllable smoke source that can be illuminated and guided by lighting and ventilation. In building science and industrial testing, they help observers see how air moves through spaces, around obstructions, or within enclosures.

Most rökgeneratorer work by heating a liquid-based fluid, commonly glycol- or glycerin-containing formulations, to produce white smoke. Other models release fine aerosols or burn a small amount of fuel under controlled conditions. Equipment ranges from compact handheld units to larger floor-mounted systems, often featuring adjustable output, timing, and duration to match the scenario.

Applications include stage and film production, smoke-testing of HVAC systems and architectural layouts, and safety or fire-rescue training. In training, smoke conditions are used to mimic real fire environments, but must be managed by trained personnel and conducted with appropriate ventilation, suitable fluids, and adherence to safety guidelines to minimize irritation, toxicity, or ignition risks.

Safety and handling: operate in well-ventilated areas and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Some fluids can irritate eyes, skin, or the respiratory tract; proper personal protective equipment may be required.
