Råttlukt, often translated as "rat smell," refers to a distinct and generally unpleasant odor associated with the presence of rats or mice. This smell is not caused by the rodents themselves in a direct way, but rather by a combination of factors related to their biological processes and living habits.

The primary source of råttlukt is the ammonia-like scent produced by rat urine. Rats are territorial creatures and mark their environment with urine, which contains urea. As the urea decomposes, it releases ammonia, creating a pungent smell. The concentration of this smell can vary depending on the number of rodents, the area they inhabit, and the duration of their presence.

In addition to urine, råttlukt can be exacerbated by other elements. Dead rodents, if not discovered and removed, will decompose and produce a strong, decaying odor. Their droppings also contribute to the smell, especially when accumulated. Furthermore, the nests that rats build, often from insulation, fabric, or other materials, can absorb these odors and become a concentrated source of the smell.

The presence of råttlukt is often an early indicator of a rodent infestation. This smell can permeate walls, furniture, and ventilation systems, making it difficult to eliminate without addressing the root cause. Cleaning and deodorizing efforts are usually only effective once the rodents have been removed and the affected areas thoroughly sanitized.
