Rypistymät, commonly known as *wrinkles* in English, refer to the fine lines and folds that develop on the skin, particularly around the face, hands, and neck, as a natural part of aging. These changes occur due to a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including the gradual breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, reduced oil production, and prolonged exposure to environmental elements.

Intrinsic aging is influenced by genetics and hormonal changes, while extrinsic aging results from external factors such as prolonged sun exposure, smoking, poor diet, and repetitive facial expressions. Collagen, a structural protein that maintains skin elasticity, diminishes over time, leading to loss of firmness and the formation of wrinkles. Elastin, another key protein, also weakens, causing the skin to sag and develop creases.

Wrinkles typically appear first around the eyes (crow’s feet), forehead, and mouth (smile lines). Over time, deeper folds may develop, particularly on the cheeks and neck. While wrinkles are a normal part of aging, their severity and appearance can vary widely among individuals based on genetic predisposition, lifestyle choices, and skincare habits.

Prevention and management of wrinkles often involve sun protection, moisturizing skincare routines, and a balanced diet rich in antioxidants. Retinoids, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid are commonly used in topical treatments to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Medical procedures such as chemical peels, laser therapy, and injectables like botulinum toxin (Botox) and dermal fillers can also be employed for more pronounced wrinkles.
