Ruggedised refers to electronic devices or equipment that have been specifically designed and manufactured to withstand harsh environmental conditions and rough handling. This often involves making them more resistant to factors such as water, dust, shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, and pressure.

The process of ruggedisation typically involves several design considerations and material choices. Casing materials are often made from robust polymers, reinforced plastics, or metal alloys. Sealing techniques, such as O-rings and gaskets, are employed to prevent the ingress of dust and water, often achieving specific IP (Ingress Protection) ratings. Internal components may be shock-mounted or otherwise secured to absorb impacts and vibrations. Displays might be made from toughened glass or have protective coatings.

Ruggedised devices are commonly found in industries where standard consumer-grade electronics would quickly fail. This includes sectors like military and defense, public safety (police, fire, ambulance), field service, logistics, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, and outdoor recreation. Examples include rugged laptops, tablets, smartphones, handheld scanners, and specialized cameras.

The benefit of ruggedisation is increased reliability and longevity in demanding environments, reducing downtime and maintenance costs. While these devices are generally more expensive upfront than their commercial counterparts, their durability and extended lifespan often make them a more cost-effective solution in the long run for mission-critical applications.
