rptdesign

rptdesign is the file extension used by Eclipse BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools) for report design files. An rptdesign file is an XML document that encodes the layout, data bindings, and behavior of a report. It does not contain report data itself; instead it serves as a blueprint that a BIRT engine renders into a final output.

A rptdesign outlines data sources (such as JDBC databases, XML data sources, web services, or in-memory data), datasets, parameters, and groups, along with the visual layout components. It supports common report elements such as tables, lists, grids, charts, images, and labels, and it can include scripts to customize interactions and formatting.

Editing is typically done with BIRT Report Designer, an Eclipse-based IDE. The file can also be edited with any XML editor, but the designer provides validation, wizards, and visual previews. The project may also embed design-time libraries, styles, and templates.

At runtime, the BIRT reporting engine loads the rptdesign, executes the configured data sources, applies parameters and scripting, and renders the report to outputs such as PDF and HTML. The runtime can also generate other formats such as Word and Excel, depending on the deployment and libraries available.
