Rotavators are commonly used in gardening and agriculture to prepare seedbeds and garden plots. They can be used for a variety of tasks, including turning over soil, weeding, and incorporating fertilizers or compost. The depth and width of cultivation depend on the size and design of the rotavator.

There are several types of rotavators, ranging from small, lightweight models for home gardens to larger, heavier-duty machines for commercial farming. Some are walk-behind units where the operator guides the machine, while others are tractor-mounted implements. The rotational direction of the tines can also vary; some rotate in the same direction as the machine moves (standard rotation), while others rotate against the direction of travel (counter-rotation). Counter-rotating tines can provide more aggressive tilling and better control in compacted soil.

The use of a rotavator can significantly reduce the labor involved in soil preparation compared to manual methods like digging with a spade. However, over-tilling can degrade soil structure, leading to compaction and reduced water infiltration. Therefore, it is often recommended to use rotavators judiciously and to consider alternative soil management practices.
