Aerating, or aeration, is the process of introducing air into a material or environment to increase its oxygen content. In practice, it improves oxygen availability for biological systems, promotes gas exchange, and can facilitate chemical and biological reactions. Aeration is used in soil and water management, wastewater treatment, composting, and aquaculture, among other fields.

In soils and turf, aeration relieves compaction, creates air channels, and enhances drainage and root growth. Common methods include core aeration, which removes plugs of soil, and spike aeration, which creates holes without removing soil. Practices are often combined with overseeding and top-dressing. The timing and frequency depend on soil type, compaction level, and turf use.

In water bodies, aeration raises dissolved oxygen levels, supports aquatic life, and improves water quality. Techniques include diffused-air systems with compressors and porous diffusers, mechanical surface aerators, and cascading or fountain aerators. Aeration is also used in wastewater treatment to promote aerobic microbial digestion and in aquaculture to maintain oxygen levels for fish and other organisms.

In composting and solid waste handling, aeration maintains aerobic conditions, speeds decomposition, and reduces odors by turning piles or using perforated pipes. In home aquariums and ponds, air stones and powerheads provide supplemental oxygen. Considerations for effective aeration include air delivery rate, mixing, temperature, and the relationship between oxygen transfer and surface area to volume.
