Overtilling refers to the excessive mechanical disturbance of soil. This typically involves repeated or deep tillage operations that disrupt the natural soil structure. While tillage can be beneficial for tasks such as seedbed preparation, weed control, and residue incorporation, overdoing it can lead to a range of negative consequences.

One of the primary concerns with overtilling is the destruction of soil aggregates. These aggregates are clusters of soil particles that create pore spaces essential for air and water movement, as well as root growth. When these aggregates are broken down, the soil can become more compacted, leading to reduced infiltration of water and increased surface runoff. This can also hinder root penetration, impacting plant health and yield.

Furthermore, overtilling can deplete soil organic matter. The rapid decomposition of organic matter is accelerated by the increased aeration caused by tillage. Over time, this loss of organic matter reduces soil fertility, water-holding capacity, and the overall biological activity of the soil ecosystem. Soil erosion is another significant risk associated with overtilling, as the loosened soil is more susceptible to being carried away by wind and water. Reduced soil biodiversity, including beneficial microorganisms and earthworms, is also a common outcome of excessive soil disturbance. Consequently, many modern agricultural practices aim to minimize tillage or adopt no-till or reduced-till systems to preserve soil health.
