riyat

Riyat, also transliterated as riayat, riāyat, or ri′ayat, is a term used in Persian, Urdu, Hindi, and related languages with several related senses. The core meaning is do with care, regard, or consideration shown toward another person, and it can also denote a concession, leniency, or favorable treatment granted in a particular situation. The word is often employed in formal, bureaucratic, or social contexts to describe observance of etiquette or the granting of allowances.

In everyday usage, riyāṭ expresses the idea of taking someone’s circumstances into account or extending politeness and regard. It can appear in phrases that indicate giving precedence, making exceptions, or showing deference. Riyat is sometimes contrasted with related terms in the broader linguistic family. A closely connected but distinct concept in Islamic ethics is riya, typically written as riā’ or riya’ in Arabic, which means ostentation or showing off one’s piety to gain social or religious approval. Although the two terms sound similar, riayat emphasizes consideration and leniency, while riya denotes insincere display.
