Riskbuffert is a concept in risk management describing a cushion built into plans to absorb potential adverse events or uncertainties. It can take the form of additional budget (contingency reserve), extra time in the schedule (time buffer), or spare capacity in operations. The buffer is intended to protect project objectives from variation in risk exposure without requiring constant restructuring of the baseline plan.

Determination and use: The size and placement of a risk buffer depend on the assessed risks, their probability and impact, and the organization’s risk tolerance. Methods include qualitative risk assessment, quantitative risk analysis (such as Monte Carlo simulations or scenario analysis), and expert judgment. Buffers are typically included in baselines and are released when identified risks materialize, or to protect critical milestones. In some frameworks a separate management reserve covers unforeseen risks beyond the identified set.

Limitations and governance: A risk buffer is not a substitute for risk reduction activities; it can be misused as a safety net that encourages risk-taking or slippage in quality. Ongoing monitoring, re-evaluation of risks, and transparent reporting are required to keep the buffer appropriate. The concept is closely related to contingency planning and overall risk governance.
