Rickettsioses are a group of infectious diseases caused by bacteria belonging to the genus *Rickettsia* and related genera, primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected arthropods such as ticks, mites, lice, and fleas. These obligate intracellular pathogens rely on host cells for replication, making them distinct from many other bacteria. The diseases they cause range from mild febrile illnesses to severe, life-threatening conditions, depending on the specific rickettsial species involved.

The most well-known rickettsial disease is Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), caused by *Rickettsia rickettsii*, which was first identified in the early 20th century in the western United States. Symptoms typically include high fever, severe headache, muscle pain, and a characteristic rash that begins at the wrists and ankles before spreading to the torso. Other notable rickettsioses include typhus (caused by *Rickettsia prowazekii* and *Rickettsia typhi*), scrub typhus (caused by *Orientia tsutsugamushi*), and murine typhus, among others. Each has unique clinical presentations and geographic distributions.

Diagnosis of rickettsioses can be challenging due to overlapping symptoms with other infections. Confirmation often relies on serological tests, such as indirect immunofluorescence assays or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, which detect antibodies or genetic material of the bacteria. Treatment typically involves antibiotics such as doxycycline, which is effective against most rickettsial pathogens. Early intervention is critical, as untreated cases can lead to complications including organ failure, neurological damage, or death.

Prevention focuses on avoiding exposure to vectors, such as using insect repellents, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating breeding sites for arthropods. Vaccines are available for some forms of typhus, but none exist for most rickettsioses. Public health efforts, including surveillance and education, play a key role in controlling outbreaks, particularly in regions where these diseases are endemic.
