Rianimazione is the Italian term for resuscitation, a medical procedure performed when a person's breathing or heartbeat has stopped. The primary goal of resuscitation is to restore spontaneous breathing and circulation, thereby preventing irreversible brain damage or death. It is a time-sensitive intervention, with every minute increasing the severity of consequences.

The most common form of resuscitation is cardiopulmonary resuscitation, often referred to by its English acronym CPR. CPR typically involves a combination of chest compressions and artificial respiration (rescue breaths). Chest compressions are delivered forcefully to the center of the chest to manually pump blood throughout the body. Rescue breaths are given to provide oxygen. The specific techniques and ratios of compressions to breaths can vary based on guidelines established by medical organizations.

Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are often used in conjunction with CPR. An AED is a portable device that analyzes the heart's rhythm and can deliver an electrical shock if a life-threatening arrhythmia is detected. This shock, known as defibrillation, can restore a normal heart rhythm.

Resuscitation efforts are typically initiated by trained individuals, such as paramedics, nurses, doctors, or laypeople who have undergone CPR training. The decision to continue or cease resuscitation is made by medical professionals based on the patient's condition and established protocols. The effectiveness of resuscitation is influenced by many factors, including the underlying cause of the cardiac arrest, the duration of the arrest, and the promptness and quality of the intervention.
