Revíziót, commonly known as "revisionism" in English, refers to the reinterpretation or reevaluation of established historical narratives, interpretations, or ideological frameworks. The term originates from the Hungarian word *revízió*, meaning "revision," and is particularly associated with debates over territorial claims, historical events, and political ideologies in Central and Eastern Europe, especially during the 20th century.

In historical contexts, revisionism often involves challenging dominant historical accounts to incorporate new evidence, perspectives, or critical analyses. For example, territorial revisionism emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in Hungary, where political and intellectual movements sought to revise the country’s post-World War I borders, which had been redrawn by the Treaty of Trianon (1920). These movements argued that the treaty unfairly diminished Hungary’s historical territories and sought to restore or adjust them through political or military means.

Revisionism can also apply to ideological reinterpretations, such as revisiting the legacy of communism or fascism to highlight overlooked aspects or to justify certain actions. While some revisionism aims at factual correction, other forms have been criticized for distorting history to serve political agendas, often by downplaying or denying atrocities or injustices. This latter type is sometimes referred to as "black revisionism" or "whitewashing."

The concept of revisionism remains contentious, as it can be seen as either a necessary corrective to historical oversights or as a dangerous attempt to rewrite history for ideological purposes. Scholars and historians often engage in revisionist debates to refine understanding, though such discussions must be grounded in rigorous evidence to avoid misinformation.
