A respiratorset, commonly referred to as a respiratory protection system, is a device designed to protect the wearer from inhaling harmful airborne contaminants. Respiratorsets can be categorized into two primary types: air-purifying respirators and supplied-air respirators.

Air-purifying respirators filter contaminants from the air before the user inhales them. They typically include a facepiece, such as a half-mask or full-face mask, and cartridges or canisters that remove specific pollutants. Examples include particulate respirators, which filter out dust and airborne particles, and gas/vapor respirators, which absorb or chemically react with toxic gases. Supplied-air respirators, on the other hand, deliver clean air from an external source to the wearer. This can be achieved through a compressed air line, a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), or an air-supplied respirator with a hose connected to a remote air source. SCBAs are commonly used in environments with low oxygen levels or where contaminants are present in high concentrations, such as in confined spaces or during firefighting. Supplied-air systems ensure a continuous supply of breathable air, eliminating the risk of oxygen depletion.

Proper selection, fitting, and maintenance of respiratorsets are critical to ensure effectiveness and user comfort. Occupational safety regulations, such as those outlined by organizations like OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) in the United States, provide guidelines for respirator use, including fit testing, training, and inspection protocols. Regular inspections and replacements of filters or cartridges are essential to maintain the device’s functionality and protect the wearer’s health.
