Replicants are fictional synthetic humanoids designed to resemble and interact with humans. They were created for dangerous, physically demanding, or off-world labor and service, most prominently by the Tyrell Corporation in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner universe. The concept has since appeared in sequels, literature, and related media, where various generations of replicants are depicted with increasing sophistication.

In the original film set, early models known as Nexus-6 were engineered to excel in strength, speed, and endurance while appearing visually indistinguishable from people. To prevent unwelcome growth of emotions or memories, many replicants were granted limited lifespans, commonly around four years. They often possessed implanted memories to provide a stable sense of identity, which raised questions about authenticity and personhood. Replicants can pass as human in everyday life, but certain tests, such as the Voight-Kampff empathy test, are used to distinguish them.

Legally and socially, Earth generally restricts or forbids replicants, who are instead deployed on off-world colonies or specialized tasks. When on Earth, they are pursued by law enforcement known as Blade Runners, whose role is to identify and “retire” rogue replicants to prevent potential harm or rebellion. The ethical and philosophical implications of replicants’ consciousness, rights, and treatment form central themes in the Blade Runner works, prompting ongoing discussion about what it means to be human.

Later installments and related media introduce newer generations, such as more compliant or differently constrained models, expanding on questions of autonomy, memory, and resistance. Replicants remain a focal point for debates about artificial life, identity, and the limits of creation.
