Reossification is the process by which bone tissue is reformed or rebuilt. This occurs naturally in the body as part of the ongoing remodeling of bone. Bone is a dynamic tissue, constantly undergoing resorption (breakdown) and deposition (formation) of new bone. Reossification is the deposition phase, where osteoblasts, specialized bone-forming cells, lay down new bone matrix.

This process is crucial for maintaining bone strength and integrity. It allows the skeleton to adapt to mechanical stresses, repair micro-damage, and replace old bone with newer, healthier tissue. Reossification is a fundamental aspect of bone healing after fractures. Once a fracture occurs, a callus of soft tissue forms, which is then gradually replaced by woven bone. This woven bone is subsequently remodeled into stronger lamellar bone through the process of reossification, eventually restoring the bone's original shape and strength.

Certain medical conditions and treatments can also stimulate or affect reossification. For instance, bone grafts used in surgery rely on the patient's own reossification processes to integrate the graft and form new bone. Conversely, conditions that impair bone formation or increase bone resorption, such as osteoporosis, can lead to reduced reossification and weaker bones. Understanding reossification is therefore important in fields ranging from orthopedics to endocrinology.
