Reliefsnitt is a term used in graphic design and printing that refers to a technique of creating a printing plate where the printing elements are raised above the non-printing areas. This raised surface is then inked, and when pressed against paper or another substrate, it transfers the ink, creating the image. This method is a form of relief printing, and the term "reliefsnitt" specifically describes the cut or carved nature of the printing surface, as opposed to other relief printing methods like letterpress where the type is cast.

Historically, reliefsnitt was a dominant printing technique. Woodcuts, a common form of reliefsnitt, involved carving an image into a block of wood. The areas to be printed were left raised, while the background was cut away. Similarly, linocuts use linoleum instead of wood, offering a smoother surface that can produce finer detail. Artists and printers would use sharp tools to carve these designs. Once the carving was complete, ink would be applied to the raised surface, often with a roller, and then paper was pressed onto the inked block. This process allowed for the reproduction of images and text, playing a crucial role in the dissemination of information and art for centuries. While digital printing has largely superseded reliefsnitt for mass production, it remains a valued technique in fine art printmaking, often appreciated for its distinctive texture and aesthetic qualities.
