Regnsensor, or rain sensor, is a device that detects precipitation, particularly rain, to enable automatic control of other systems such as windshield wipers in vehicles or irrigation systems. In automotive use, regnsensoren are usually mounted near the top of the windshield and operate as optical sensors. They employ an infrared emitter and receiver to monitor light interacting with the glass. Rain droplets scatter and diffuse the infrared light, producing a measurable change in signal that the vehicle’s control unit translates into wiper activity. Some designs use capacitive sensing or other methods.

In irrigation and landscape automation, regnsensor devices sense rainfall to prevent unnecessary watering. Common approaches include electronic rain sensors that detect moisture or the presence of rain by measuring changes in conductivity across exposed electrodes, and optical rain sensors that detect rainfall by how it interferes with light. There are also traditional tipping-bucket rain gauges used to measure rainfall depth and feed data to controllers.

Advantages include improved safety and convenience from automatic wiper control and reduced water use from rain-aware irrigation. Limitations include sensitivity to dirt, windshield coatings, and glare that can affect optical sensors, as well as false readings during mist, dew, or spray. Maintenance and proper placement are important for reliable operation.
