Referenssijännite, or reference voltage, is a stable and precisely known voltage that serves as a benchmark in electronic circuits. It is crucial for analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), digital-to-analog converters (DACs), voltage regulators, and other circuits where accurate voltage comparisons or scaling are required. A good reference voltage exhibits high accuracy, low temperature drift, and excellent long-term stability.

The generation of a reference voltage typically involves specialized integrated circuits or discrete components. Common methods include using the Zener diode breakdown voltage, which, when operated in its reverse breakdown region, provides a relatively stable voltage. However, Zener diodes can have significant temperature dependencies. More sophisticated reference voltage generators often employ bandgap references. These circuits utilize the temperature-dependent voltage characteristics of semiconductor junctions, such as bipolar transistors, to create a voltage that remains nearly constant across a wide temperature range.

The accuracy and stability of a reference voltage are paramount for the performance of the circuits it supports.
