Referensdesign, or reference design, is a complete design package provided by semiconductor manufacturers to demonstrate how a particular integrated circuit, subsystem, or platform can be implemented in a real product. It typically serves as a validated starting point for development, illustrating recommended hardware and software configurations, performance targets, and integration approaches.

A reference design usually includes several components: circuit schematics or a bill of materials, a printed circuit board layout, firmware or software examples, test procedures, and application notes. It may also provide layout guidelines, bill of materials alternatives, thermal and electrical performance data, and recommended test fixtures. Some packages include a development board or evaluation kit to facilitate rapid experimentation.

The primary purpose of a referensdesign is to accelerate product development, reduce risk, and provide a reference benchmark for performance, power, and reliability. Designers can use it to validate feature sets, benchmark against competitors, and learn best practices for integration, rather than starting from scratch.

A reference design is not a production-ready product. Users often adapt or optimize it for manufacturability, cost, regulatory compliance, and specific use cases. Licensing terms, NDA requirements, and potential trademarks or branding considerations may apply. Vendors typically view referensdesigns as a means to demonstrate the capabilities of their components and to support customers through the development lifecycle.
