redpoint

Redpoint is a term used in rock climbing to describe a successful lead ascent of a route after the climber has previously worked the moves on that route. In a redpoint, the climber climbs from the ground to the top in a single, continuous effort without falling. The rope and protection are used for safety during the ascent, but the climb is not aided by rests or other devices that would constitute aid; while climbers may shake out onholds, a clean redpoint requires not falling from start to finish.

The concept contrasts with onsight and flash. An onsight ascent is made on the first try with no prior information about the route, while a flash involves climbing a route on a first attempt with some knowledge of its holds and moves, often gained from guidance or prior practice. Redpoint terminology is most common in sport climbing and traditional climbing, and it is used when recording a successful ascent after practice on the moves.

Origins of the term are somewhat unclear, but it became widespread in the late 20th century as competition and sport climbing grew. The redpoint mark is often noted on route guides or noted in climber reports to distinguish these fully practiced, clean ascents from initial attempts without prior work or attempts that ended in falls.
