In traditional media, readership estimates consider reading frequency, depth of engagement, and audience recall. In digital environments, metrics such as unique readers, time spent, and engagement actions are used, though they do not always map neatly onto classic readership concepts.

Readership is influenced by factors including literacy, access to reading material, language, price, cultural interest, and the availability of online content. Demographics, geography, and device use shape who reads what and how often. Differences exist across formats: newspapers and magazines often rely on periodic readership, while books seek lifetime or annual readership; online content emphasizes reach and engagement.
