Randdecoraties are decorative motifs applied along the borders of objects, or at the edge interface between surfaces. The term, derived from Dutch rand meaning edge or border and decoraties meaning decorations, describes a broad category rather than a single technique. Randdecoraties appear in many material cultures and periods, from everyday ware to fine art objects, and across contexts such as ceramics, textiles, metalwork, glass, wood, and architecture.

In ceramics and pottery, rim bands or border motifs are common, often repeating geometric or floral patterns. In textiles, borders along hems or selvages feature motifs and color blocks. In metalwork and glass, borders can be incised, engraved, damascened, gilded, or inlaid. In architecture, friezes, cornices, moldings, and banded ornament serve as randdecoraties that frame spaces or emphasize edges. In bookbinding, gilt edges, tooling on spines, or decorative borders on covers are typical examples.

Historically, randdecoraties function to unify a piece visually, indicate status, or reference a particular stylistic language. They can vary in complexity from simple line bands to elaborate compositions and often reflect regional motifs and workshop practices.

In modern design, randdecoraties remain a common feature in decorative arts and design objects, while in conservation practice they aid dating and attribution; restorations attempt to preserve or reproduce original edge decorations.
