Rail automation refers to the deployment of automated and semi-automated control systems to manage railway operations with reduced human intervention. It encompasses signaling, train control, traffic management, and passenger information systems designed to improve safety, capacity, and reliability.

Core technologies include Automated Train Operation (ATO), Automatic Train Protection (ATP), and Automatic Train Supervision (ATS). ATO can range from driver assistance to fully unattended operation. ATP enforces safety constraints such as speed and braking, while ATS monitors network status and dispatches trains. Advanced signaling methods such as CBTC (communication-based train control) and ETCS (European Train Control System) enable higher capacity with continuous communication between train and trackside elements. The levels of automation, described by the GoA framework, range from GoA1 manual operation to GoA4 unmanned operation.

Implementation often uses centralized control centers and interoperable subsystems: signaling, interlocking, train control, and passenger information. CBTC and ETCS are prominent standards that support interoperability in urban and mainline networks. Rail automation has been adopted extensively in urban metros and is increasingly deployed on mainline networks, including high-capacity routes and selective freight corridors.

Benefits include improved safety by reducing human error, increased network capacity through tighter headways, energy efficiency, and lower operating costs. Challenges include safety certification, integration with legacy systems, high upfront costs, and cybersecurity risks.

The field is evolving with digitalization, including predictive maintenance, remote operation centers, and cyber-resilient architectures; ongoing standardization aims to enhance cross-border interoperability.
