Displacement damage creates vacancy-interstitial defects, dislocations, swelling, and changes in optical or electrical properties. These effects are of concern in nuclear reactors, aerospace, and semiconductor devices and are studied through modeling and irradiation experiments.

Risk assessment relies on absorbed dose (gray) and equivalent or effective dose (sievert). The concept also informs regulation and safety practices under ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) to minimize radiation-induced harm.
