A päringustring, in web terminology, is the part of a URL that follows the question mark and encodes data as key‑value pairs. It is used to pass parameters to a server, such as search terms, filters, or pagination settings.

The typical structure consists of pairs in the form key=value, with pairs separated by ampersands (&). For example, in http://example.com/search?q=cat&page=2, the päringustring is q=cat&page=2. Keys may appear multiple times, and the order of pairs is generally not significant for the server. Values and sometimes keys are URL‑encoded to allow special characters. Spaces are commonly encoded as %20 or as + in certain contexts.

Encoding and parsing are central to the päringustring. The string is usually percent‑encoded to ensure that non‑ASCII characters and reserved symbols do not break the syntax. On the server side, frameworks parse the päringustring into a data structure such as a dictionary or map, making parameters available to applications as name‑value pairs.

Compared with the URL path and the fragment, the päringustring is intended for data submission rather than resource identification or client side navigation. Security and privacy considerations are important: sensitive data should not be transmitted in a päringustring, as it can appear in browser history, server logs, and referer headers. Developers should validate and sanitize input, be mindful of length limitations, and prefer POST for sensitive or large submissions when appropriate.
