Pyöräilykypärän is the Finnish word for a bicycle helmet. A bicycle helmet is a type of protective gear worn by cyclists to reduce the risk of head injury in the event of a fall or collision. Modern bicycle helmets are typically constructed from a hard outer shell, often made of polycarbonate or ABS plastic, and an inner lining of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam. This foam is designed to crush upon impact, absorbing some of the energy that would otherwise be transmitted to the rider's head.

The primary purpose of a pyöräilykypärän is to protect the skull and brain from serious injury. Studies have shown that wearing a bicycle helmet significantly reduces the risk of head trauma, including concussions and more severe brain injuries. Helmets are designed to withstand impacts from various angles and provide protection against abrasion.

Proper fit is crucial for a helmet to be effective. A well-fitting helmet should sit level on the head, covering the forehead, and should not shift excessively when the rider moves their head. The straps should be adjusted so that the helmet is snug but comfortable, with the buckles positioned just below the earlobes and the chin strap tightened enough to prevent the helmet from tilting forward. Many helmets also feature an adjustable retention system at the back of the head for a customized fit.

While the effectiveness of bicycle helmets is widely accepted in reducing head injuries, the debate continues regarding mandatory helmet laws. In Finland, as in many other countries, wearing a pyöräilykypärän is not legally mandated for all cyclists, though it is strongly recommended by health and safety organizations.
