Puuseppä is a craftsman who works with wood to create, fit and finish components for buildings and furniture. The term comes from puu, meaning wood, and seppä, an old word for a craftsman, and in Finnish usage it covers carpenters, joiners, and cabinetmakers. A puuseppä plans projects, measures, cuts, shapes, joins pieces and applies finishes. In construction, they may produce structural elements such as beams, stairs, doors, and window frames. In furniture making, they craft cabinets, tables, chests, and interior fittings, often combining function with design.

Work methods blend traditional hand skills with modern machinery. Common techniques include measuring and marking, sawing, planing, chiselling, and joinery like mortise-and-tenon or dovetail joints. Finishing might involve sanding, oiling, varnishing, or painting. In contemporary practice, a puuseppä may also operate with power tools, CNC routers, and CAD-based planning, especially in custom or small-batch production. Quality and durability, as well as aesthetics aligned with Finnish design traditions, are valued.

Training and career pathways typically involve vocational education and training in carpentry or furniture making, often with an apprenticeship that combines on-the-job learning with classroom instruction. Experienced puusepät may advance to master craftsman status or manage own workshops, undertaking bespoke commissions or contracting in construction.

Historically central to Finland’s timber culture, puuseppä skills contributed to residential architecture and the country’s renowned furniture design. The term is often used interchangeably with carpenter, joiner, or cabinetmaker, depending on specialization.
