Purdying is a term commonly used in the construction and renovation industry, particularly in drywall finishing. It refers to the process of applying joint compound, often referred to as "mud," to seams and imperfections in drywall panels to create a smooth, seamless surface. This multi-stage process is essential for preparing walls and ceilings for painting or other finishes.

The first stage of purdying typically involves filling the gaps between drywall sheets and embedding paper or fiberglass tape into the wet compound. This tape bridges the seams and prevents cracking. Once the initial coat dries, a second, wider coat of compound is applied to feather out the edges and further conceal the tape and seams. A third, and sometimes final, coat is applied, even wider than the second, to ensure a perfectly smooth transition that blends seamlessly with the surrounding drywall.

After each coat of compound dries, it is sanded smooth to remove any ridges, imperfections, or trowel marks. The level of smoothness achieved during purdying significantly impacts the final appearance of the painted surface. Higher levels of finish, such as Level 4 or Level 5, require more extensive purdying and sanding to achieve a truly flawless appearance, especially under critical lighting conditions. The term "purdy" itself is thought to be a colloquialism derived from the word "purify" or "pretty," reflecting the goal of making the drywall surface look clean and aesthetically pleasing.
