Pumice itself forms during explosive volcanic eruptions of highly viscous, silica-rich magma. Rapid depressurization causes gas to exsolve and create a frothy, bubbly structure that solidifies into a light, highly vesicular rock. Because of its low density, fresh pumice can float on water. The descriptor pumiceous emphasizes these vesicular, frothy characteristics rather than a specific mineral composition.

In practice, pumiceous textures are found in various volcanic rocks and deposits, including pumice flows, pumice-rich tuffs, and ash beds that contain abundant pumice fragments. The term can also describe surfaces or materials that have a pumice-like roughness or abrasive quality, even when not literally composed of pumice.
