A Psyker is a fictional character type originating from the Warhammer 40,000 universe, a science fantasy setting created by Games Workshop. Psychics, or Psyker, are individuals who possess the ability to manipulate reality through the power of their minds, known as the Warp. This power is drawn from the Immaterium, a chaotic and infinite dimension that exists alongside the physical universe. The ability to wield psychic powers is rare and often considered a curse due to the unpredictable and dangerous nature of the Warp.

Psykers are typically marked by a distinct genetic trait, the Psyker Gene, which allows them to channel psychic energy. This gene is often associated with the Adeptus Astartes, or Space Marines, a superhuman warrior caste of the Imperium of Man. Many Space Marines, particularly those from certain chapters, are genetically enhanced to include the Psyker Gene, though the majority are not. The most famous example is the Space Marine Chapter known as the Thousand Sons, whose members were originally created as Psykers.

Psykers can manifest their abilities in various ways, including telekinesis, precognition, healing, and even reality-warping powers. However, prolonged use of psychic abilities can lead to madness, as the Warp corrupts the mind. This corruption is often depicted as the Psyker losing touch with reality, becoming unstable, or succumbing to the influence of malevolent entities from the Warp. To mitigate this risk, Psykers are often trained in psychic discipline and may use psychic shields or other protective measures.

In the Warhammer 40,000 lore, Psykers play crucial roles in both military and administrative capacities. They serve as navigators, guiding starships through the void of space, and as strategists, providing battlefield insights. However, their presence is also feared, as their powers can be exploited by enemies or turned against their own forces. The Imperium maintains strict control over Psykers, often confining them to institutions like the Inquisition or the Adeptus Custodes to prevent misuse of their abilities.
