Pseudomagic is a term used to describe performances, claims, or beliefs that present effects as supernatural or magical while relying on deception, illusion, or misapplied science rather than genuine supernatural powers. In discussions of stage magic and related fields, pseudomagic often refers to acts that simulate magic through tricks and psychological manipulation, or to individuals who attribute their abilities to paranormal causes but do not demonstrate verifiable powers.

Techniques commonly associated with pseudomagic include sleight of hand, mechanical devices, misdirection, psychological subtleties, and prop-based effects. Mentalism, when performed as entertainment, occupies a closely related space: some shows purport to reveal real psychic abilities, while others acknowledge the tricks behind the scenes. Critics use the term pseudomagic to differentiate entertainments that are transparent illusions from claims of genuine supernatural influence.

Ethical and epistemic concerns are central to the concept. Skeptics argue that pseudomagic can mislead audiences about the nature of evidence, while supporters of magic arts distinguish between deliberate deception in service of entertainment and sincere belief in occult powers. The label is also used in discussions of popular culture, where pseudosupernatural claims are marketed as authentic to attract audiences or as pseudoscience.
