Prvoky is a term used in Czech and Slovak to refer to protozoa, a diverse group of mostly single-celled eukaryotic organisms. Protozoa are not a single clade but a collection of lineages that share the general trait of being microscopic, unicellular eukaryotes that primarily feed on organic matter, microbes, or debris. They inhabit a wide range of environments, including freshwater and marine systems, soil, sediments, and as parasites in plants and animals.

Key characteristics of prvoky include a true nucleus and various organelles, with notable diversity in size, shape, and physiology. Many prvoky move using different structures: pseudopods in amoeboid forms, flagella, or cilia. Feeding methods also vary, from phagocytosis of particles to osmotrophy, and some can form cysts to survive adverse conditions. Reproduction is often asexual by fission, but several groups can engage in sexual processes or reversible genetic exchange.

Taxonomy of prvoky is historically broad and not organized around a single evolutionary lineage. Modern biology recognizes that protozoa comprise multiple major clades across several eukaryotic supergroups, including amoebae (Amoebozoa), various flagellates and ciliates (Excavata, SAR, and others). Consequently, scientists prefer discussing major groups such as amoebae, ciliates, flagellates, and apicomplexans rather than a single “protozoa” clade.

Ecology and significance: prvoky play essential roles in microbial food webs and nutrient cycling, acting as predators, decomposers, or symbionts. Some species are parasites or disease agents in humans and animals (for example, Giardia, Entamoeba, and malaria-causing Plasmodium are studied in medical contexts). Protozoa are also important model organisms in biology and ecology for understanding cellular processes and ecosystem dynamics.
