Prosessilouhinta, or process mining, is a discipline that bridges the gap between traditional data science and traditional process management. It focuses on discovering, monitoring, and improving real processes by extracting knowledge from event logs readily available in today's information systems. Event logs are digital records of activities performed by a system, containing at least a case identifier, an activity name, and a timestamp.

The core idea of process mining is to use these event logs to automatically generate a process model that accurately reflects how a process is actually executed. This model can then be analyzed to identify bottlenecks, deviations from the desired process, and areas for improvement. Unlike traditional process analysis methods, which often rely on manual interviews or subjective observations, process mining provides an objective, data-driven view of operational realities.

There are three main types of process mining. Discovery is used when no a priori process model exists and aims to discover a process model from the event logs. Conformance checking compares an existing process model with the actual behavior recorded in the event logs, highlighting deviations and potential compliance issues. Enhancement, or performance analysis, uses event logs to improve an existing process model by adding performance information, such as execution times or resource utilization.

Process mining has applications in various industries, including finance, healthcare, manufacturing, and logistics. It helps organizations understand their operational performance, optimize resource allocation, improve customer satisfaction, and ensure compliance with regulations. By providing a transparent and data-backed understanding of how work is actually done, process mining enables more effective and efficient business process management.
