Propagand is a term referring to the systematic dissemination of information, ideas, or rumors to influence public opinion or behavior in a coordinated way. It is often associated with political or ideological objectives, but it can also appear in advertising, social campaigns, or war effort. The word is closely related to propaganda, and in many contexts the two spellings are used interchangeably. The concept dates back to early modern eras, with organized propaganda efforts emerging in statecraft and wartime mobilization; the term gained prominence in the 20th century in relation to state institutions that coordinate messaging.

Techniques include repetition, simplification, appeals to emotion, fear, scapegoating, the use of symbols and slogans, testimonials, bandwagon strategies, transfer, and cherry-picking data. Modern propagandistic efforts combine mass media, social media, and tailored messaging using audience segmentation and microtargeting. They may employ censorship, misinformation, disinformation, or omission of inconvenient facts.

Contexts vary widely. Governments have created ministries or agencies to oversee propaganda; political movements have used propagand to mobilize supporters; corporate actors use branding and public relations that can include propagandistic elements. Distinctions include that propaganda aims to shape beliefs often through biased or incomplete information, while advertising also shapes beliefs but typically operates within product or service goals and legal advertising standards.

Impact and ethics: Propagand can influence democratic deliberation, political stability, and social cohesion, but it risks deception, polarization, and erosion of trust. Media literacy and fact-checking are common countermeasures.
