A production process consists of inputs (materials, energy, information), transformation activities (manufacturing, assembly, testing), and outputs (finished goods, by-products). Key constraints include capacity, equipment availability, quality requirements and process variability. Effective processes use layout optimization, routing, and scheduling to balance demand with capacity and minimize waste.

Performance is measured with indicators such as lead time, cycle time, throughput, yield and inventory levels (work-in-progress). Management approaches such as lean manufacturing, Six Sigma and total quality management focus on reducing waste, improving quality and achieving consistent performance.
