Producentansvar, or extended producer responsibility (EPR), is an environmental policy approach in which producers are financially and/or physically responsible for the end-of-life management of products they place on the market. The aim is to shift the costs and responsibilities of waste handling from governments and taxpayers to the producers who created the products, thereby encouraging design for durability, recyclability, and reuse.

Implementation is typically achieved through laws or regulations that require take-back schemes, recycling targets, and funding through producer responsibility organizations or direct producer fees. Producers may collaborate in collective recycling programs or pay fees that finance public or private waste management systems. The approach often distinguishes between the responsibilities of producers, retailers, and municipalities, and it creates incentives to minimize waste and improve environmental performance of products.

Common EPR sectors include packaging, electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), batteries, end-of-life vehicles, and tires. In the European Union, EPR is embedded in directives such as the WEEE Directive, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive, and the Batteries Directive, with national regulations implementing the schemes. Other regions adopt similar frameworks to varying degrees, adapting to local market structures and waste-management capacities.

Supporters argue that EPR reduces public spending, raises recycling rates, and promotes eco-design, while critics point to administrative complexity, potential cost shifts, and uneven enforcement. Overall, producer responsibility remains a central element of many circular economy strategies.
