Procesarkitektur refers to the design and organization of the processes that make up an organization or system. It defines how processes are structured, how they relate to one another, and how information and resources flow between them. The purpose is to enable consistent execution, scalability, and alignment with strategic objectives, while supporting governance, reuse, and standardization across the value chain.

A process architecture typically comprises a process landscape or catalog, process families or domains, end-to-end value flows, process interfaces and handoffs, and information flows. It identifies process owners, process boundaries, inputs and outputs, performance metrics, and dependencies on applications, data, and technology. The architecture is often developed in tandem with business and IT architectures to ensure coherence between processes, data, and systems.

Modeling and analysis use standardized notations such as BPMN for process diagrams and value stream maps for end-to-end flows. Process mining and performance measurement help validate the as-is state and target improvements. The to-be state describes how processes should operate after changes, including new roles, automation, or outsourcing. The architecture should support governance and change programs, migrations, and capability development.

Governance roles commonly include process owners, process architects, and BPM specialists, within a governance framework that defines standards, repositories, and review cycles. It interfaces with enterprise architecture frameworks such as TOGAF or ArchiMate and with process modeling standards like BPMN and data and application architectures to ensure alignment.
