A probabilist is a person who specializes in probability theory, a branch of mathematics that studies random events, models, and uncertainty. In academia, probabilists are mathematicians or theoretical statisticians who seek to understand the laws that govern random systems, develop new models, and prove formal results. The field emphasizes rigorous foundations—often built on measure theory, functional analysis, and combinatorics—and ranges from abstract limit theorems to concrete stochastic processes.

Common areas include stochastic processes (such as Markov chains and Brownian motion), limit theorems (law of large numbers, central limit theorem), random graphs, concentration phenomena, and probabilistic combinatorics. Probabilists also work on probabilistic methods in analysis, ergodic theory, and mathematical physics, as well as applications to computer science, finance, genetics, and risk assessment.

Professionally, probabilists typically hold PhDs and are employed in universities, research institutes, or industry laboratories. Their work consists of formulating problems, constructing models, proving theorems, and communicating findings through papers and conferences. Teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels is common, and collaboration with statisticians, mathematicians, and applied scientists is frequent.

Historically, probability theory emerged from problems of gambling and risk in the 17th century and matured through the 20th century with axiomatization by Kolmogorov and later advances in stochastic analysis. Today, a probabilist may contribute to both theoretical foundations and interdisciplinary applications, depending on interests and opportunities.
