A printkort, also known as a printed circuit board (PCB), is a fundamental component in most electronic devices. It serves as a platform to mechanically support and electrically connect electronic components using conductive pathways, pads, and other features etched from copper sheets laminated onto a non-conductive substrate. These conductive pathways are often referred to as traces.

The primary purpose of a printkort is to facilitate the assembly of electronic circuits. Instead of using wires to connect individual components, components are soldered onto pads on the printkort, and the traces on the board provide the necessary electrical connections between them. This method of construction is highly reliable and significantly reduces the size and cost of electronic devices compared to older wire-wrapped or breadboard prototypes.

Printkort manufacturing involves several complex processes. It begins with a design created using specialized software, which then guides the fabrication steps. These steps typically include etching away unwanted copper to leave only the desired traces, drilling holes for component leads or vias (connections between layers), and applying a solder mask to protect the copper and prevent solder bridges. Finally, a silkscreen layer is often applied to label components and their orientation.

The complexity of printkort designs can vary greatly, from simple single-sided boards with components on one side to sophisticated multi-layer boards with dozens of layers, allowing for intricate routing and high component density. The materials used for the substrate and copper thickness are chosen based on the intended application, considering factors like thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, and mechanical strength.
