Prick testing, also known as prick-prick testing or scratch testing, is a common method used in allergy diagnostics. It involves introducing a small amount of a suspected allergen into the superficial layers of the skin, typically on the forearm or upper back. The procedure is generally quick and well-tolerated.

During a prick test, the skin is first cleaned. A drop of a liquid allergen extract is then placed on the skin. A lancet, a very fine needle, is used to gently prick or scratch through the drop of allergen and into the epidermis. This allows a tiny amount of the allergen to penetrate the skin. A control prick is usually performed with a saline solution to ensure the skin's reaction is specific to the allergen and not due to the physical stimulus.

After approximately 15 to 20 minutes, the skin is observed for reactions. A positive reaction is indicated by the formation of a wheal (a raised, itchy bump) and flare (redness surrounding the wheal). The size of the wheal is measured and recorded. A larger wheal generally suggests a higher likelihood of allergy to that specific substance. The intensity of the reaction is graded by healthcare professionals.

Prick testing is used to identify allergies to a wide range of substances, including pollens, dust mites, pet dander, certain foods, and insect venom. It is a valuable tool for allergists to confirm or rule out specific allergies and guide subsequent management strategies, such as allergen avoidance or immunotherapy. While generally safe, potential side effects are usually limited to local itching, redness, and swelling at the test site. In rare cases, systemic reactions can occur, which is why the procedure is always performed under medical supervision.
