Presenceaware is a term used to describe systems and applications that detect the presence of people, devices, or assets within a given environment and tailor behavior accordingly. The concept is widely used in smart homes and smart buildings, as well as in collaboration tools and mobile apps that adjust functionality based on user presence.

Sensing and data sources include passive infrared motion detectors, camera-based systems with on-device processing, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signal analysis, beacons, occupancy sensors, and device-proximity indicators. Data can be processed at the edge or in the cloud, and the presence state is often represented as a confidence score or discrete status such as present or absent.

Applications span energy management, where lighting and climate control respond to occupancy; user experience, where notifications and work modes adapt to presence; and space analytics, where occupancy patterns inform design and scheduling.

Privacy and security are central concerns for presenceaware systems. Best practices emphasize consent, data minimization, transparent data use, clear retention policies, local processing where possible, and robust controls to disable or adjust sensitivity.

Challenges include accuracy, privacy-preserving data handling, sensor interoperability, and ensuring accessibility and inclusivity. There are no universally adopted standards specific to presenceaware, but the field often relies on general IoT interoperability practices and, where applicable, presence protocol concepts from telecommunications.
