Prepressure, often referred to as prepress, is the set of processes that prepare a design or document for printing. It encompasses file preparation, color management, layout, trapping, imposition, proofing, and the creation of production-ready files or plates. The aim is to ensure accurate reproduction of artwork on a chosen press and substrate.

Practically, prepressure begins with reviewing incoming files for completeness—fonts, image resolution, and color space—and includes adjustments such as color correction, image retouching, and compositing. Color management is central, using ICC profiles to translate colors between devices and maintain consistency in CMYK or spot-color workflows. Trapping compensates for potential misregistration between colors, while imposition arranges pages for efficient printing and finishing.

Proofing, via soft proofs on calibrated displays or hard proofs on paper, validates color and layout before production. Output processes include generating production-ready files for the printer, setting up raster image processing (RIP), halftone screening, and, in offset work, plate creation. Industry standards such as PDF/X and ISO 12647 guide file formats and color requirements to improve interoperability.

Digital prepress emphasizes automation and workflow integration, while traditional prepress handles film-based or platemaking steps. The overall aim is to minimize surprises at press time, reduce waste, and ensure consistent results across devices, inks, and substrates. Challenges include maintaining accurate color across devices, managing fonts and licensing, and coordinating with designers, agencies, and printers.
