Predator-scavengers, sometimes written as predatorscavengers, are organisms that regularly combine predation with scavenging, exploiting both live prey and carrion as part of their foraging strategy. The term describes a flexible, opportunistic approach rather than a strict dietary category.

In ecological terms, predator-scavengers link predator–prey dynamics with carrion-based nutrient cycles. Their behavior can influence prey populations through hunting pressure, accelerate carcass decomposition, and interact with specialized scavengers and competitors at feeding sites.

Among mammals, several large carnivores—such as hyenas, lions, wolves, and jackals—hunt but will opportunistically scavenge when carrion is available or when prey is scarce. Many birds, including vultures and some corvids, primarily scavenge yet may predate small animals or participate in hunts. Sharks and some crustaceans also exploit carcasses opportunistically, and insects such as beetles play a key role at carcass sites.

Adaptations for predator-scavengers include acute senses for detecting carcasses, social or cooperative foraging to defend and access kills, and physiological traits that tolerate decaying matter. These strategies can enhance energy efficiency and enable rapid resource exploitation across fluctuating environments.

Human activities influence predator-scavenger dynamics through habitat alteration, poisoning, and carcass management. In turn, predator-scavengers contribute to ecosystems by removing dead animals, reducing disease risk, and facilitating nutrient recycling.
