Precoal refers to organic matter in the very early stages of coal formation. It represents the transition from plant or animal material to peat and then to coal. This stage is characterized by a high moisture content and a relatively low carbon content, with the organic material still retaining many of its original biological structures. The process of precoal formation occurs in environments where organic debris accumulates faster than it decomposes, typically in waterlogged conditions like swamps or bogs.

The initial transformation of plant material into precoal involves biochemical processes, primarily the action of microorganisms. These microbes break down the more easily digestible components of the organic matter, leading to a concentration of more resistant compounds like lignin and cellulose. As this process continues under increasing pressure and burial, the material begins to lose some of its volatile components and gain carbon. Precoal is not a distinct geological classification in the same way that lignite or bituminous coal are, but rather describes a stage within the broader process of coalification. Understanding precoal is important for studying the geological history of carbon-rich deposits and the early stages of fossil fuel formation. Its properties are significantly different from those of more mature coals, making it less useful as a fuel source in its raw state.
