Common steps for water intended for drinking include coagulation and flocculation to remove solids, filtration, disinfection (often with chlorine or alternative disinfectants), and ongoing monitoring of microbial and chemical indicators. Groundwater and surface water supplies are subject to source protection and routine testing; distribution systems are designed to minimize contamination.

Standards and guidelines vary by country but share core elements. Internationally, WHO guidelines provide a framework; regional regulators such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the European Union’s Drinking Water Directive, and national ministries publish enforceable limits and testing schedules. Bottled and packaged potables are governed by additional labeling and quality requirements.

In everyday use, the term potables emphasizes safety for drinking, distinguishing beverages intended for consumption from non-potable liquids. Potability is assessed by authorities, and consumers may rely on official advisories during contamination events or equipment failures.
